Southend was still in shock when Boris Johnson announced it was to be made a city following the violent killing of the Southend West MP, David Amess, by an alleged terrorist. The veteran Essex politician had spent recent years campaigning for city status, but the local reaction to the news wasn’t exactly one of euphoria. There have been positive noises, but also confusion about what this means exactly, fears that rent and council tax will now rise, and the sense of an impending identity shift.
